In Malaysia, the first step in renewing road tax is to have valid car or motorcycle insurance. Once the insurance record is updated, eligible vehicle owners can renew through online channels such as MyJPJ, MyEG or TNG eWallet, or visit an authorised physical counter MyEG or the post office. The right method depends on who owns the vehicle, the vehicle category and whether any inspection, permit, or record update is required. This guide explains how to renew road tax, what to prepare, and how to avoid common problems.

4 things you need before renewing road tax

    1. Valid motor insurance

Your vehicle must have active insurance that covers the full road tax period requested. If you have just renewed your insurance, allow time for the electronic cover note to reach the Road Transport Department’s system before attempting the road tax renewal. Car owners deciding on coverage can learn more about choosing suitable car insurance and compare car insurance plans before renewing. Motorcycle owners whose coverage is due can compare motorcycle insurance plans.

    1. Matching owner and vehicle information

Prepare the registered owner’s identification details and the vehicle registration number. The information entered during renewal must match the records held by the authorities. A mismatch in the owner’s name, identification number, or vehicle details may prevent the transaction from going through.

    1. No active blacklist

An active blacklist against the registered owner or vehicle can block renewal. This does not mean that every unpaid summons automatically prevents the transaction. If the system reports a blacklist, resolve it with the relevant authority before trying again.

    1. A suitable renewal period

Private vehicle road tax can generally be renewed for six or 12 months. Your insurance must remain valid for the whole period selected. Renewal normally opens up to two months before the existing road tax expires, so you do not need to wait until the final day.

4 places where you can renew road tax in Malaysia

    1. TNG eWallet

Eligible users can renew road tax online through TNG eWallet. The process can be completed digitally from a mobile device. Search for the road tax service, enter the required owner and vehicle information, review the quotation and details, then complete payment. This option is especially relevant if you also need to review your car or motorcycle insurance. Always check the latest eligibility and product information shown in the service before confirming payment.

    1. MyJPJ

Eligible Malaysian individuals can use MyJPJ to renew road tax for private cars and motorcycles registered under their own name. After renewal, open Profile and select Motor Vehicle Licence to view the digital road tax. Motor Vehicle Licence refers to road tax, not your driving licence.

    1. MyEG

MyEG supports online road tax renewal for private cars, private motorcycles and vehicles for persons with disabilities. The vehicle must have valid insurance, no active blacklist and road tax that has not expired for more than 36 months.

    1. JPJ counters and other authorised outlets

A counter may be the better option when the transaction involves a company owned or commercial vehicle, a foreign owner, a representative, an ownership or identity issue, an inspection requirement, or another special case. Depending on current availability and eligibility, physical channels may include JPJ counters, selected UTCs, kiosks, Pos Malaysia locations and other authorised service outlets. Bring the identification and supporting documents required for your situation.

What to do if your road tax has expired

Renew it as soon as possible. You still need valid insurance before you can renew road tax. Do not drive or leave the vehicle on a public road until the renewal is complete.  If the road tax expired within the last three years, you may still be able to renew it online if there is no blacklist or other restriction. If it expired more than three years ago, contact JPJ. The vehicle will need an inspection before you can renew the road tax at a JPJ counter.

3 special situations that may need extra checks or documents

These involve motorcycles, commercial or e-hailing vehicles, company or foreign ownership, and vehicles registered in locations with different requirements.

    1. Commercial and e–hailing vehicles
Commercial vehicles need a valid PUSPAKOM inspection and operating permit for the road tax period. Renew at a JPJ office, branch or UTC.
    2. Company owned or foreign owned vehicles
MyJPJ online renewal is not available for company owned vehicles or non-Malaysian owners. Visit a JPJ office, branch or UTC. The owner or representative must bring their identification.
    3. Vehicles in Sabah, Sarawak or duty-free areas
Road tax rates and declaration areas may differ. If you renew a lower-rate declaration area, update the declaration area with JPJ first. Bring the vehicle declaration area certificate and Customs Declaration K3 or port receipt when required.

5 common road tax renewal problems

    1. The system cannot find your insurance
The insurer’s electronic record may not have reached the renewal system yet, or the insurance period may not cover the full road tax term. Confirm the policy details with the insurer and try again after the record is updated.
    1. The owner or vehicle details do not match
Check the MyKad number, full name, and vehicle registration number. If the official record itself is outdated or incorrect, contact the relevant authority rather than repeatedly submitting different details.
    1. The renewal is blocked by a blacklist
Check the owner or vehicle status with JPJ. Resolve the blacklist with JPJ before trying to renew again. Allow time for the updated status to appear in the system.
    1. Payment was made but the new road tax Is not visible
Review the transaction status and payment record first. Avoid paying twice while the original transaction is still being processed. Contact the renewal provider if payment is confirmed, but the renewed road tax isn’t reflected on the app.
    1. The online platform does not support your vehicle classification
Online eligibility varies, especially for commercial vehicles, company ownership, foreign owners and cases requiring inspections or record changes. Visit JPJ counter for assistance.

Do you still need a physical road tax sticker?

No, as of 1 February 2026, individually owned private vehicles will be issued digital road tax that is viewable through MyJPJ. Enforcement officers can verify the vehicle’s status through official systems. It is recommended to take a screenshot of your road tax in cae you are outside of network coverage.  Requirements can differ for company vehicles, foreign owners, commercial categories and certain special cases like travelling across borders. Check the latest rules for your vehicle category rather than assuming one arrangement applies to every vehicle.

    Conclusion

Renew your road tax before it expires. Make sure your insurance is valid, your details are correct and there is no blacklist. Eligible users can renew road tax through TNG eWallet and check the digital road tax in MyJPJ after payment.
