How to reload your TNG eWallet with a credit card — and why it’s worth it
by Haziq
Reloading your TNG eWallet with a credit card comes with a 1% transaction fee. And yet, for many users, it remains one of the most popular ways to top up.
Why? Because when used strategically, credit card reload isn’t just a payment method, it’s a tool that can earn you rewards, give you spending flexibility, and fit neatly into your financial routine.
This guide covers everything you need to know: what credit card reload is, why and when to use it, and a step-by-step walkthrough of how to do it in the app.
What is credit card reload?
A credit card reload is exactly as the name says, it lets you top up your TNG eWallet balance using a Visa or Mastercard credit card. The amount gets billed to your monthly credit card statement, meaning you spend now and pay later.
As of 23 February 2024, TNG eWallet applies a 1% convenience fee to all credit card reloads. For example, reloading RM100 will cost RM101. This fee was introduced to offset processing costs and is transparently applied at checkout.
Note: Reloads via debit card or DuitNow Transfer remain free of charge.
Why reload with a credit card?
So now that we know what is a credit card reload, let’s have a look at why you should reload with a credit card. Despite the fee, there are real, practical reasons to choose credit card reload, provided you use it with intention.
- Earn rewards on every reload
This is the most compelling reason for most users. When you reload with a credit card, the transaction may count toward your card’s rewards programme, potentially earning you:
- Cashback — some cards return a percentage of eligible spending
- Reward points — redeemable for merchandise, vouchers, or statement credits
- Travel miles — for frequent flyer redemptions
When your card’s reward rate exceeds 1%, the reload effectively pays for itself, and then some. For example, if your card earns 1.5% cashback on eWallet top-ups, you’re netting a 0.5% gain even after the fee.
Always check your card’s T&Cs to confirm whether eWallet reloads qualify as eligible spend.
- Participate in credit card promotions
Banks and card issuers regularly run campaigns that reward spending within a specific period. Credit card reload can help you:
- Hit minimum spend thresholds for cashback campaigns
- Earn bonus points during promotional windows
- Take advantage of seasonal or limited-time offers
For instance, TNG eWallet has previously run promotions offering cashback for new credit card reload users making the first few reloads especially rewarding.
- Better cash flow management
Unlike debit card or bank transfer reloads — which deduct from your account immediately — credit card reload gives you a buffer. Your reload is billed at the end of your statement cycle, giving you:
- More time to manage your cash flow
- A consolidated view of your monthly expenses in one statement
- A structured repayment cycle that aligns with your budgeting habits
This is particularly useful if you manage multiple expenses monthly and prefer to keep your bank account balance intact day-to-day.
- Convenience for planned or larger reloads
If you reload your eWallet frequently or in larger amounts, credit card reload offers a predictable, trackable method. All your reload activity appears in your credit card statement, making it easy to:
- Monitor total eWallet spending over time
- Spot patterns in your digital spending habits
- Align reloads with your personal budgeting strategy
- Auto-Reload — set it and forget it
One of the most underrated features of credit card reload is Auto-Reload. You can link your credit card to automatically top up your eWallet whenever your balance falls below a threshold you define.
This means you’ll never be caught off-guard with insufficient balance — especially useful for daily commuters, frequent TnG highway users, or anyone who relies on TNG eWallet for regular payments.
- QuickPayment – fast, seamless checkout
With Quick Payment, you can complete transactions instantly without going through multiple steps. Whether you’re scanning a DuitNow QR or paying at your favourite merchants, everything happens in just a tap.
It’s designed to make everyday payments faster and smoother — perfect for moments when speed and convenience matter most, like during peak hours or on-the-go purchases.
When does credit card reload make the most sense?
Credit card reload is the right choice when:
- Your card earns rewards on eWallet top-ups that outweigh the 1% fee
- You want to hit a minimum spend for an ongoing credit card promotion
- You prefer spending flexibility over immediate fund deduction
- You’re setting up Auto-Reload for hands-free balance management
- You reload in larger amounts and want consolidated billing
It’s less ideal when you’re reloading small, irregular amounts where the fee adds up without a meaningful reward return — in those cases, debit card or DuitNow Transfer (both free) are the smarter choice.

Things to keep in mind
Credit card reload can be a smart tool, but like any financial feature, it works best when used responsibly.
- Factor in the 1% fee. Always calculate whether your rewards or benefits outweigh the cost before choosing this method.
- Stay within your credit limit. Reload amounts are billed to your card, so ensure you have sufficient available credit.
- Pay your statement on time. Late payment charges or interest can quickly erode any rewards earned.
- Check your card’s eligibility. Not all credit cards treat eWallet top-ups as qualifying spend for rewards — verify with your card issuer.
- Credit card reload balance is non-transferable. Funds reloaded via credit card cannot be transferred out to a bank account — they can only be used for spending within TNG eWallet.
The bottom line
Credit card reload on TNG eWallet isn’t for everyone, but for users who know how to leverage it, it’s genuinely valuable. The 1% fee is a known cost; the rewards, flexibility, and convenience are the return.
If you’re earning cashback that exceeds the fee, managing cash flow across a billing cycle, chasing a promotion, or simply want the peace of mind of Auto-Reload, then credit card reload is a tool worth using.
Reload smart, spend smart, and make every transaction work a little harder for you.
